A Nigerian lawyer, Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, Esq., has sued MTN Nigeria over the alleged rapid depletion of her 800GB annual data plan, demanding an explanation of how more than 700GB was reportedly consumed within about three months.
Adams, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, said she purchased the 800GB annual plan for ₦125,000 on May 15, 2026, but by August 27, only 91.45GB remained.
According to her complaint to MTN customer care, the network’s records indicated that approximately 708.55GB had been deducted from her allocation in about 104 days, leaving her with only 11.4 per cent of the original data bundle.
The lawyer said the rate of depletion was unusual, particularly because she subscribed to an annual package and does not consider herself a heavy data user.
Adams said she has been an MTN subscriber since she was 10 and expressed concerns about the accuracy of the network’s data accounting.
She explained that her internet activities are mainly carried out on a single mobile device and do not involve activities typically associated with heavy data consumption.
“I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device,” she said.
The lawyer has asked MTN to conduct a detailed investigation into the alleged depletion and provide records covering her data usage between May 15 and August 27, 2026.
Among the information she requested are the date and time of each data-consumption session, the amount deducted during each session, and a chronological statement showing her data balance and deductions.
She also requested details of the applications, services, categories or destinations responsible for significant data deductions, where such information is technically available to the telecommunications company.
Adams said the speed and extent of the depletion raised legitimate concerns that required a technical and account-level review.
She therefore called for an immediate reconciliation of her data usage and a transparent explanation of how the reported deductions were made.
As of the time of her complaint, the lawyer was awaiting MTN Nigeria’s response and the detailed records she requested to independently verify the reported consumption.
